ESL Teaching Opens Doors

America is a place of many cultures united together through English as a common language. For many people who have immigrated to the United States, English is not their first language. Over 17% of the American population speaks a language other than English1 according to the US Census Bureau. Of that population, many are linguistically isolated from America̢۪s English speaking culture and need instruction to learn to speak English proficiently.

How well a person can speak English affects their day to day activities. It affects their ability to interact with businesses, public officials, and potential employers. Many times, the linguistically isolated will rely on a family member or friend who can speak English fluently for routine activities such as grocery shopping or banking. This can be detrimental over time when the translator is not available to the non-native speaker who will lose ability to interact outside of their home. In 2000, over 11 million Americans were linguistically isolated with poor English speaking capabilities.2 This number has risen to over 36 million people who do not speak English or have a high command of the language.3

With a growing population that does not speak English, more than ever there is a need for ESL teachers. ESL teachers can make up to $46,500 per year and work a traditional 10 month school year.4 Another rewarding aspect of ESL Teaching is the ability to work with students that range in age from small children to the elderly who need to learn English to be able to interact day to day in an English speaking world.
